I find self and family portraits are a great way to experiment. Nobody cares how I paint myself, ancestors like Andrew Symmington Gilchrist are dead and have no say in the matter, and living members of my family are quite kind/forgiving as to how I paint them.

When I want to paint someone from life, I'm always there; and the mirror doesn't care about how long it takes me to paint the portrait. The painting of my father in his study & Simon Reading were done from life, the rest of the non-self-portraits were done with the help of reference photos.

The last 5 paintings on the bottom row are from the 1990's. The top two rows range from 2010-2016.
